image enhancement

An excellent way to boost the quality of your images is to use the advanced image-enhancement tools of your ScanWizard scanning software.

ScanWizard is designed to give users the greatest functionality in image adjustment. By using the image-enhancement tools, you can see the scanned image change right before your eyes in real time -- incorporating the enhancements you've added.

ScanWizard's image-enhancement tools include the following:

Brightness, Contrast and Exposure
This tool changes the brightness, contrast, and exposure of the entire image. Brightness determines the number of shades you get; contrast determines the intensity of those shades.

An image with high contrast has less grey shades between black and white and appears to have less visible detail. An image with low contrast has more grey shades and tends to look flat. Exposure allows you to increase or reduce available light to the image and may help more image detail emerge in the process.

Shadows and Highlights
This tool allows you to select a new shadow point to become the darkest value in an image, or to set a new highlight point to become the lightest value. The Shadow and Highlights tool can bring out more visible detail in an image, especially if it has only a limited range of greys or colours.

Curve
This tool lets you modify the gamma, which is the contrast affecting the middle range of greys in an image. The Curve tool lets you modify the midrange of greys without dramatically altering the shadows and highlights. Using a combination of the Shadows and Highlights tools together with the Curve tool gives you the most precise control for adjusting the tonal values of your images.

Filters
The Filters tool lets you apply or create special effects to your images. The filters include the Blur filters (Blur and Blur More); the Sharpen filters (Sharpen and Sharpen More); Edge Enhancement; Emboss; and (for Windows only) Unsharp Masking.

Tints
This tool lets you adjust the hue and saturation of an image. The hue of an image is what distinguishes a colour from another (whether it's red, green, blue, etc.). Saturation refers to the intensity of the colour (more red, more green). The Tints tool applies only to colour images.

Auto (Automatic Contrast Control)
This tool optimised the contrast of scanned images by adjusting the gamma and shadow/highlight values. This is one of the simplest tools to use, requiring only the click of a button. It can have the most dramatic effect on your image, and its results are immediately visible.

Colour Correction / DCR
This tool applies a generic colour profile to your images to give it accurate, lifelike colour. If you have Microtek's DCR colour calibration and correction system installed, the Colour Correction button will override the generic colour profile embedded in your scanning software and apply DCR instead to the image. The Colour Correction tool applies only to colour images.
